Okra

Scientific Name: Abelmoschus esculentus

Okra seedlings.

Okra seedlings.

Eatable portion: Immature pods

Preferred Temperatures (°F): 85 is optimum for germination, okra can withstand higher temperatures throughout growth.

Preferred pH: 6 – 7

Plant spacing: Direct seed 3 -4 cm apart

Flowering begins at the base of the plant and progresses up the stem, simultaneous with stem growth. This makes for a continuous harvest. Harvest the immature pods of okra before the seeds develop. This prevents the pods from being hardened, making them better for eating.
